recoloring

Recoloring is the basic foundation of spriting. In most of the other forms, you will need to recolor at one point or another. So, this tutorial should come in handy for you. ^^; This tutorial is for MS Paint, because that is used by many spriters. If you have a more advanced program, you can follow the tutorial and just do the method differently. First, find two sprites. I'm going to get colors from a secondary sprite rather than make my own. So, I'll recolor a Charizard with Nidoqueen's palette for this tutorial.

Be sure that you are zoomed in. 6x or 8x works well, but you can achieve 10x magnification by clicking on the white bar below the options.

The Eraser Trick

The eraser trick is a quick and easy way to change colors. So, to recolor, let's start with the darkest shade on Nidoqueen (not including the outline). Select that shade as the background color by using the eyedropper tool and right clicking on the color. Then, select Charizard's darkest shade as the foreground color by left clicking. This should be your color box:

Now, select the erase. Then, holding down the right mouse button, drag the eraser over the Charizard. This will replace the foreground color with the background color, in this instance recoloring Charizard's darkest shade. Repeat this process with the medium shade, the highlight shade, and the outline.

You can now do this with any secondary colors on the sprites, such as replacing the color of Charizard's stomach with the color of Nidoqueen's stomach. As an end result, you should have something like this:

Have fun recoloring!
